New goods and services have increased retail options for
consumers and, at the same time, increased the complexity of the
marketplace. To help consumers as they navigate the marketplace, the New
York State Consumer Protection Board (CPB) has opened a “Consumer School”
for New Yorkers. Each series seeks to build a consumer’s understanding of
transactions in the marketplace.
Consumer 101: Shopping
The CPB advises consumers to exercise caution as they look for bargains in
stores and online. Further, the CPB provides important information for
consumers to be aware of before returning and exchanging unwanted
merchandise, when redeeming gift cards and upon entering into rent-to-own
contracts.
