The NYS Consumer Protection Board Issues “Green” Household Advice and
Launches Kids Home Energy Page in Commemoration of Earth Day
|
In keeping with the spirit of the 39th Annual Earth Day, and in support of Governor Paterson’s environmental initiatives, the New York State Consumer Protection Board (CPB) today issued a new publication providing consumers with “green” cleaning tips for the home entitled, “It’s EASY Being GREEN!,” and launched a new section of its Kids Corner dedicated to Energy Saving tips for our youngest New Yorkers.
“Earth Day is the catalyst for increased environmental awareness,” said Mindy A. Bockstein, Chairperson and Executive Director of the CPB, “but we should all do more than participate in this one-day event. Every day should be Earth Day. Changing our individual methods may seem insignificant, but even the smallest of steps are important.” The CPB urges consumers of all ages to do their part to protect our environment by taking action. However, looking toward the future, we are empowering our youngest consumers by giving them some tools they can use to make a difference and help save energy.
Providing information to help create a greener New York State, the “It’s EASY Being GREEN!” brochure encourages consumers to choose nontoxic, inexpensive products to clean households. The brochure, available online at
www.nysconsumer.gov, lists the most common homemade cleaners and supplies and provides instructions on how consumers can utilize them.
The Kids Home Energy Page consists of two publications, “Energy-Saving Tips” and “The Family Home Energy Quiz” providing important “kid-friendly” advice about global warming and how to conserve energy to save valuable resources for our planet. The Quiz provides an excellent resource for the family to determine their home’s energy efficiency.
Additional related resources available on the CPB website include: the CPB’s “Consumer Guide to Home Heating Oil, Propane and NYS Consumer Assistance Programs providing plain-language information about heating oil and propane to help low-income and other consumers reduce their home heating bills and encourage conservation and the CPB’s Home Heating Tips issued as part of the Homeownership initiative Home Maintenance Series.
The NYS CPB, established in 1970 by the New York State Legislature, is the State's top consumer watchdog and think tank.
The CPB's core mission is to protect New Yorkers by publicizing unscrupulous and questionable business practices and product
recalls; conducting investigations and hearings; enforcing the “Do Not Call” law; researching issues; developing
legislation; creating consumer education programs and materials; responding to individual marketplace complaints by securing
voluntary agreements; and, representing the interests of consumers before the Public Service Commission and other State and
federal agencies.
