Statement Regarding Today's Announcement By The Public Service Commission For Energy Reform From Mindy A. Bockstein Chairperson And Executive Director Of The NYS Consumer Protection Board
|
The New York State Consumer Protection Board (CPB), as the sole Agency with
statutory responsibility to represent consumers before the Public Service
Commission (PSC), today praised the Commission’s program to reduce the demand
for energy and support efficiencies that will benefit consumers and buoy
Governor Paterson’s goal of reducing electricity demand by 15 percent below
projected levels by 2015 through its Energy Efficiency Portfolio Standard (EEPS)
initiative.
“The PSC has taken an important step in addressing the growth of electricity
demand in New York State,” said Mindy A. Bockstein, Chairperson and Executive
Director of the CPB. “The PSC’s actions are predicated on energy efficiency
initiatives the Governor previously announced for the Long Island Power
Authority and New York Power Authority, and will enable the New York State
Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and utilities operating in
New York to substantially expand the opportunities for consumers to reduce their
energy bills as a direct result of this action.
Today’s PSC announcement of the EEPS initiative puts energy efficiency programs
in New York State on the right track. The CPB has advocated for these changes,
filing briefs to that effect in related proceedings, and will continue to work
with the PSC, NYSERDA and others to help assure that the benefits from these
energy efficiency programs far exceed their cost. While more work needs to be
done, we look forward to seeing the results of these solid energy efficiency
guidelines and parameters once they have been implemented.”
